Follow Along via TripTracker
TripTracker.net uses Google Earth, uploaded pictures and GPS track files to plot a trip visually, and it allows interested people to watch as the trip progresses. For Window users, they offer a simple .NET framework program that makes uploading gps tracks and photos simple. I’ve set up a Trip Tracker site for the Around the Great Lakes Expedition. You’ll be able to access this from the Trip Tracker link above or via this post in the Route and Timeline menu under Expedition. My web designer is going to integrate the map into the front page of the website as well.
When I’m on my trip, I’ll track my progress using a Garmin eTrex Vista HCx Color High-Sensitivity Mapping Handheld GPS. This is a sweet GPS unit with a long battery life and the ability to automatically write track files to a miniSD card, which I can insert into my ASUS Eee PC 901 8.9-Inch Netbook
without any extra cords. This has allowed me to reduce the extra electronic equipment that I have to carry. I think this is a pretty nice solution without having to use a Spot Satellite Messenger with GPS Tracking

Sounds like a great adventure! If you want to capture and save your tracks for future reference, Abaq.us has launched a free service called myGeoDiary (www.myGeoDiary.com) where you can quickly and easily organize, personalize and share your geo-data. The data is for personal use only, and you can keep it private or publish it via widgets to any web site you choose (e.g. Flickr, your personal website etc.) You might want to check it out, too.
